Step Three: Discover Your “Why”
I don’t know why you are trying to lose weight. Everybody has his or her own reasons. I know for me it is about being there for my wife and four children. I want to play an active part in their lives and eventually my grandchildren’s lives.
For you it is probably different, and although I am interested… I don’t need to know your reason why.
But one thing I do know is that it’s important that YOU know why you want to lose the weight. Knowing and understanding this will help drive you when things get tough (and they will).
And research has clearly demonstrated that people who understand their “why” are more effective at losing weight (and a host of other goals). And because most people have trouble really establishing their true why, I have a brief exercise you can do below that might be a huge help to you.

Please write down the answers to these questions:
1: Why might you want to do the things necessary to lose weight?
2: How ready are you to do the things necessary to lose weight— on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 means “not ready at all” and 10 means “totally ready”?
3: Why didn’t you pick a lower number? If you picked “1”, what would it take for that 1 to turn into a 2?
4: Imagine you’ve lost all the weight you wanted and are at your ideal weight, what would the positive results be?
5: Why are those positive results important to you?
6: What’s the very next thing you are going to do?
