Green Smoothie Cleanse

There are several ways to do a Green Smoothie Cleanse, but most involve lots of greens and natural, whole foods.

The promise: Promoters of green smoothie-type cleanses say that some people are holding on to excess weight because toxins are trapped in fat cells. Raw greens, they propose, can rid the body of those toxins, and, as an added bonus, reprogram the taste buds. So, when you’re done with detox, instead of craving potato chips, you’ll crave lettuce and celery.

During the cleanse you’ll lose 10 – 15 pounds, amplify your energy, clear your mind, sleep better, and see less tummy bloating.

Oh, and did I mention you’ll be in a better mood?

The basics: As I said earlier, there’s not one single way to do a Green Smoothie Cleanse. However, the fundamentals are pretty much the same …. For about 10 days, substitute 1, 2, or all 3 meals with “green smoothies.” That would be green leafy vegetables (arugula, bok choy, collard greens, dandelion greens, kale, lettuce, spinach, watercress, etc), fruits and water. Plenty of water and herbal teas are a staple on a green smoothie cleanse.

To keep your metabolism humming you can add in some non-dairy, plant-based protein, like soy milk, almond milk, or protein powder. And snack on crunchy fruits and vegetables, such as apples, celery, and peppers during the day, as well as high-protein snacks like hard-boiled eggs, and raw, unsalted nuts and seeds. If you’re only smoothie-ing for 1 or 2 meals, the other meals should consist of healthy foods, like salads (no creamy dressings!).

No-nos include refined sugar and carbs, animal products (like meat and dairy), liquor, soda, and coffee.

Does it work? Again, you will most likely lose weight if all you’re putting into your body is green vegetables. And, you will be getting a nice amount of calories and nutrients with all the veggies you’re drinking. However, while advocates claim that “typical detoxification symptoms” include headaches, pains, nausea, cravings, fatigue, muscles aches and skin rashes, those are more likely due to …. Wait for it … hunger!

Also, like the Master Cleanse, if you’re not eating solid food for a 10-day-period, you’re going to feel deprived and may go ballistic after the cleanse is over, negating any gains you may have made over the 10-day detox.

Hi, I'm Dr. Steve Sisskind, Chief Medical Officer & Founder at RealDose Nutrition.

As a young physician, I struggled because my patients came to me with serious health issues, but I didn't have the right tools to help them. Medical school taught me how to put "band aids" on their symptoms with drugs and surgery, but not how to address the root causes of their problems.

Years later I discovered a better approach... based on the fundamental idea that the power of nutrition can transform your health and vitality. But there's a lot of confusion... What foods should I eat? Which supplements should I take? What does the science say?

I have dedicated my life to answering these questions... And I share this knowledge with you every day here at RealDose Nutrition.

        Hi Ragh,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! There could be a number of factors which has caused you to gain weight. Your thyroid problem could be one but it could also be your body’s natural tendency to bounce back which has slowed down your progress. I generally recommend that you change your exercise routine as well as adjust the calories you take. You need to adjust your food intake for every 10 pounds you have lost to maintain your progress. I recommend that you also try and workout with a partner keep you inspired and disciplined. Lastly, be sure to get between 7 to 8 hours of good quality sleep to help your body recuperate and prepare for the next day. Hope this helps! Make it a healthy day!

      Hi Ragh,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! There is no strict rule to use all of the green vegetables we recommend. Instead, try to find what is fresh and readily available in your area and be sure to have a generous amount every day. Hope this helps! Have a healthy day!

  3. how much of each ingredient do you use for this cleanse? Say I wanted to use lettuce, almond milk, a fruit and some water. How do I know how much to put in or does it matter???? Thanks!

    • Dr. Steve Sisskind

      Hi Kathy,

Thank you for writing in and for posting your concerns with us! Depending on how much smoothie you want to make, a handful of greens plus half a cup of almond milk, water and fruit should be enough to give you about a quart of the green drink. Be sure to steep your tea in advance and allow it to cool for a bit in order not to cook the vegetables. Hope this helps! Make it a healthy day!

  4. All you said is very true, back In January I fasted 42 days cutting out meats, breads, soda, &sweets. 6. Hi Dr Steve, If one is trying to not eat diary. Is whey considered not acceptable. Can it be used as part of a detox? Thank you for your help.

    • Dr. Steve Sisskind

      Hi Esther,

Thank you for writing in and for sharing your concerns with us! It actually depends on the kind of cleanse you are doing. If the cleanse asks for no dairy, then taking whey protein while on the cleanse may give you a different outcome. However, for those on a Raw Food Diet, they whey protein from RealMeal GF may be used. Hope this helps! Make it a healthy day!
